Story: Alexander and the Wise Mystic
After years of conquering lands and expanding his empire, Alexander the Great grew restless. He had wealth, power, and victory—yet a strange emptiness crept into his heart. One day, he heard of a mystic, a wise sage who lived by a river, untouched by worldly ambitions.
Curious, Alexander rode to meet him. He found the mystic sitting peacefully under a tree, gazing at the flowing water.
“Why do you sit here doing nothing?” Alexander asked, puzzled. “The world is vast, filled with opportunities. Shouldn’t you work to achieve greatness?”
The mystic smiled and pointed to the river.
“Do you see how the water flows?” he asked. “It moves without force, without struggle, yet it carves mountains and nourishes life. You, Alexander, are like a man trying to hold the river in his fists—always grasping, never content.”
Alexander frowned. “But I have achieved so much! I have conquered half the world.”
The mystic chuckled. “And what will you do after you conquer the whole world?”
Alexander thought for a moment. “Then I will rest.”
The mystic leaned forward. “Why not rest now?”
Alexander was struck by the simplicity of the words. He had spent his life chasing power, believing that once he had enough, he would finally find peace. But in that moment, he realised peace was not something to be earned after a lifetime of struggle. It could be found at any moment if one learned to let go.
Moral of the Story
This story teaches us that work has a purpose, but it should not consume our lives. We chase success thinking it will bring happiness, but happiness is found in balance, not in endless striving. Work should be meaningful, not just a race to the finish line.
The Power of Taking a Break
From morning to night, we stay busy with work, chores, and responsibilities. The more we do, the more we feel accomplished. Yet, no matter how hard we work, it never feels like enough. Sometimes, we wish for more hours in a day to achieve even more.
Since everyone around us, our spouse, friends, and colleagues, are also constantly working, we assume it’s normal to always be occupied. We become so focused on our tasks that we forget other important parts of life, like caring for our health, family, and relationships.
However, working endlessly has consequences. No matter how much sleep we get, we still feel tired. We wake up exhausted and depend on tea or coffee for energy. Over time, our sleep cycle and digestion suffer. To fix the deficiencies caused by neglecting our health, we start taking supplements and medications.
This cycle goes on for weeks, months, and even years—until something forces us to stop. It might be a health issue, stress, or even family problems. Sometimes, we notice these warning signs early and take action. But often, we ignore them and push ourselves even harder.
We may succeed in our careers but struggle in our relationships. We may earn well, but feel disconnected from our children. Even if we go to the gym, practice yoga, and eat well, health issues like hypertension and diabetes still appear.
Why does this happen?
Even when life looks successful from the outside—good income, a stable job, a happy family—we may still feel empty, react impulsively, and have weak relationships.
The key to fixing this is learning to pause and reflect. Pausing helps us see where we need to improve:
- When we stop and think about our mental health, we notice the stress that affects us.
- When we review our health reports, we realise some issues need attention.
- When we assess our relationships, we see if we’ve drifted apart from loved ones.
- When we reflect on our career, we understand whether we are truly happy with our path.
But how often should we pause?
Taking breaks allows us to make better choices. Here’s a guide:
- Mental health: Take short breaks during the day to relax.
- Physical health: Review your health weekly to catch problems early.
- Relationships: Spend quality time daily with loved ones. Resolve conflicts before sleeping.
- Career: Reflect every three months to adjust your goals.
Conclusion:
Life is not just about moving fast. It’s about moving in the right direction. Regular pauses help us make wiser decisions and live a more fulfilling life
